Maharashtra: Massive Blast At Bhandara Ordnance Factory, Eight Killed

A massive blast at an ordnance factory in Bhandara, Maharashtra, killed at least eight people and injured seven others on Friday morning. The explosion occurred around 10:30 a.m., said District Collector Sanjay Kolte.

Rescue teams are searching for survivors, while firefighters work to contain the situation. Authorities confirmed that five people have been rescued so far. An excavator is being used to clear the debris caused by the blast, which led to a roof collapse trapping at least 12 individuals.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, addressing a press conference in Nagpur, confirmed the casualties. He offered condolences and observed a moment of silence for the victims.

The intensity of the explosion was such that it was audible 5 kilometers away. Videos captured from a distance showed thick smoke rising from the factory.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blast. An investigation is underway.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed concern over the incident in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). He revealed that 13 to 14 workers were trapped under the collapsed roof. He confirmed the safe rescue of five individuals and stated that rescue operations are ongoing.

Special Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Nagpur Municipal Corporation teams have been dispatched to assist. Medical assistance teams are also on standby. The district administration is coordinating with defense forces to expedite rescue efforts.

The tragic incident has drawn widespread attention, with authorities prioritizing rescue and relief operations.
