India’s commitment to sustainable water management was prominently showcased at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos 2025, with Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil leading discussions on fostering international collaboration for a water-secure future.
This marked the first time a Union water resources minister participated in the prestigious global platform, underscoring India’s growing leadership in addressing water-related challenges.
The session, which attracted over 300 attendees, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and global water experts, highlighted India’s significant strides in water conservation.
During the session, Minister Patil spoke about India’s impressive progress in water conservation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “PM Modi considers water conservation a top priority, ensuring every effort to secure water for all,” he said.
Patil also discussed Gujarat’s transformation from a water-scarce state to a model of water security during Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister. He emphasized the role of initiatives like the creation of 75 lakes in every district, which contributed to the restoration of over 60,000 lakes nationwide. These large-scale efforts, Patil noted, have reinforced India’s water resources and set an example for sustainable water management globally.
The Union Minister also stressed the importance of international cooperation, highlighting water scarcity as a universal issue exacerbated by climate change, overpopulation, and overuse.
“Water connects all of us. Collective action is key to ensuring a sustainable future,” Patil emphasized, urging countries to collaborate in solving the global water crisis.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared the state’s success stories in water conservation, particularly community-led initiatives and watershed programs that have significantly improved rural livelihoods and boosted agricultural productivity.
Fadnavis pointed to programs like the Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to provide clean drinking water to every household, and the Namami Gange program, which focuses on rejuvenating India’s rivers, as examples of effective water management.
The session also saw global leaders discussing innovative technologies to tackle the ongoing water crisis. India’s growing influence in water conservation was recognized, with leaders calling for united action to secure clean water access for all.
Patil concluded the session with a powerful message: “Sustainable water management is not a choice – it’s a necessity. Together, we can ensure clean water access for everyone.”
