Ramdas Athawale Slams Raj Thackeray Over Language Row; Urges Strict Action Against Violence

Amid a growing row over language-based violence in Maharashtra, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Sunday strongly criticised Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray for his controversial remarks on the Marathi language.

Athawale accused Thackeray of promoting ‘dadagiri’ (bullying) and inciting his supporters to use violence, which he said goes against the principles of democracy.

Speaking to ANI, Athawale said, “Raj Thackeray made a highly controversial statement, which encourages those who engage in dadagiri. He is a politician and should avoid such things. To beat someone because of language is not good, and this language of slapping someone must end.”

Athawale questioned the practicality of Thackeray’s remarks, especially in Mumbai, which is home to a diverse population.

He warned that such actions could drive industries away from the state and harm employment.

“Mumbai is the economic capital, with many non-Marathi business owners. If industries leave, will Raj Thackeray provide jobs to all?” he asked.

Silence of Uddhav Thackeray questioned

The Union Minister also took aim at Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, asking why he remained silent amid growing attacks on Hindus.

Citing the legacy of Balasaheb Thackeray, Athawale said, “Balasaheb did much for Hindus, but what is Uddhav doing now to protect them?”

The controversy erupted after Raj Thackeray advised MNS workers to ‘hit people below the eardrums’ if they refused to speak Marathi, though he asked them not to record such incidents.

This followed an alleged attack by MNS members on a businessman’s office for not using the local language.

Athawale condemned this approach, stating that many non-Maharashtrians born in Mumbai speak fluent Marathi, and violence over language is unjustifiable.

He appealed for the arrest of individuals involved in such attacks.

In response to the incidents, Maharashtra police have detained several MNS workers linked to the assaults.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also assured the public that the government won’t ‘tolerate hooliganism in the name of language’.

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court in April, seeking legal action against Raj Thackeray for alleged hate speech and requesting derecognition of the MNS.

This controversy has once again ignited debates on linguistic identity versus inclusivity in Maharashtra.

While regional pride remains a sensitive topic, many fear that such rhetoric could foster division and violence.
