Maharashtra: Illegal Cough Syrup Stock Worth Over Rs 62,000 Seized from House In Thane District

A house in the Thane district of Maharashtra was raided on Tuesday based on a tip-off, resulting in the seizure of cough syrup worth over Rs 62,000.

A house in the Thane district of Maharashtra was raided on Tuesday based on a tip-off, resulting in the seizure of cough syrup worth over Rs 62,000. Three individuals residing in the house have been implicated in the case as they lacked a valid license for storage, the police said on Wednesday.

The house, situated in Khardi village, was found to contain bottles of cough syrup that contained codeine phosphate. It is important to note that the sale of cough syrup containing codeine is strictly regulated and requires a prescription from a registered medical practitioner.

As a result, a case has been filed against the individuals under various sections, including Section 328 (Causing hurt through poison), Section 272 (Adulterating food or drink intended for sale, to make the same noxious), and Section 273 (Sale of noxious food or drink) of the Indian Penal Code. Additionally, the case involves provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act.

In a similar incident, authorities arrested an individual last month for possessing an unapproved stock of 70 bottles of cough syrup intended for sale. The person was apprehended by the Kranti Chowk police for the unauthorized possession of the cough syrup. The crackdown took place near the Central Bus Stand.

According to reports, the cough syrup confiscated by the police contained codeine as the primary ingredient. Codeine is categorized as a mild opioid narcotic and is unlawfully sold to individuals seeking narcotic highs. Such illicit sales cater to addicts who misuse the substance for recreational purposes, posing a risk to public health and safety.
