Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis
In a historic moment, Koyasan University in Japan bestowed upon Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis an honorary doctorate, marking the first time in its 120-year history that such an accolade has been granted. The recognition comes in acknowledgment of Fadnavis’ significant contributions to water conservation, infrastructure development in Maharashtra, and his endeavors in community-based initiatives aimed at fostering social equality.
The announcement of this prestigious honor was made during Fadnavis’ visit to the university in August, and the official ceremony took place at Mumbai University’s Convocation Hall in Fort.
During his address, Fadnavis revealed the initiation of a comprehensive study titled “Maharashtra at 75 in 2035,” focusing on the overall development of the state.
Emphasizing his commitment to the welfare of the poorest individuals in the state, he shared his vision for their well-being. Reflecting on the importance of forward-thinking, Fadnavis drew parallels with the visionary goals set by late President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing their respective initiatives such as ‘Mission 2020’ and the vision for a developed India by 2047.
Speaking to the media, Fadnavis expressed the belief that without Kalam’s foresight or Modi’s aspirations, the nation might not have pursued such ambitious goals. He stressed the significance of keeping an eye on the future, particularly as Maharashtra approaches its 75th anniversary in 2035. Fadnavis affirmed his commitment to presenting his views on the state’s envisioned future shortly.
Acknowledging the longstanding support from Japan, Fadnavis highlighted the nation’s steadfast assistance, notably mentioning the substantial financial contributions from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for projects such as Metro Line 3 and the Mumbai Trans-Harbor Link (MTHL). He praised Japan for its collaboration on flood mitigation measures in Mumbai, drawing parallels with similar successful initiatives in Tokyo.

Japan’s Consul-General in Mumbai, Fukahori Yasukata, underscored the historical significance of the award, noting that Koyasan University, with its 1,200-year legacy, recognized Fadnavis for his humanity and distinguished contributions. He expressed his delight at the decision to honor Fadnavis, citing the unique qualities that set him apart as a remarkable individual.
