The accident occurred around 11 AM on the Kalyan–Murbad road near Rayta Bridge, when a car travelling towards Murbad collided head-on with a dumper truck.
According to officials, 12 people were inside the car at the time of the crash.
Initial reports indicated that eight passengers died on the spot, while one succumbed to injuries at a hospital. Later, two more victims died during treatment, taking the total number of fatalities to 11. The injured are currently undergoing medical care.
Police teams from Titwala reached the scene shortly after the incident and began rescue operations with the help of local residents, who assisted in shifting victims to nearby hospitals.
Anil Laad, Titwala Deputy SP, said the process of identifying the deceased is ongoing and added that a case has been registered.
Authorities are also examining whether there were any lapses on the part of concerned departments.
Preliminary findings suggest that overspeeding or loss of control may have led to the collision.
The crash also caused heavy traffic congestion along the Titwala–Kalyan stretch for several hours.
An investigation is underway, and further details are expected.
