In Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district, the body of a 23-year-old man from Krushnar village had to be tied to a wooden cot and transported on a two-wheeler since his family faced difficulty in obtaining an ambulance or hearse in the remote area. The young man had been receiving treatment for tuberculosis at a private hospital in Hemalkasa and passed away on July 20.
When the family was unable to arrange for an ambulance to transfer the body from the hospital, they ingeniously affixed the wooden cot to a two-wheeler to carry their loved one home for the final rites. Regrettably, the remote location made it challenging to get in touch with the municipal council or health department personnel to request assistance with a hearse or ambulance.
Fortunately, a police patrolling vehicle noticed the situation and promptly contacted the taluka health officer to organize an ambulance. The authorities quickly dispatched an ambulance, which then transported the deceased’s body to a government hospital for necessary formalities before proceeding with the final journey for the last rites, covering a distance of 17 km.
The lack of proper mobile network connectivity in the remote area may have contributed to the family’s decision to transport the body on their own. Nonetheless, as soon as the health department was alerted, they provided the necessary help and support to the grieving family.
