Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday highlighted the state’s efforts to promote women in sports on the sixth day of Shardiya Navratri, invoking Maa Katyayani as a symbol of courage, determination and strength.
In a post on X, CM Yogi said the goddess represents unwavering resolve and the protection of righteousness. He linked these qualities to the changes in women’s safety and sporting opportunities in Uttar Pradesh over the past nine and a half years.
The Chief Minister said the state had expanded sports infrastructure, including village playgrounds, block-level mini stadiums, district stadiums, sports colleges and the Major Dhyan Chand Sports University in Meerut. He further highlighted financial rewards for medal winners at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
The state’s ‘Bring Medals, Get Positions’ initiative, which offers direct recruitment opportunities to eligible athletes, was cited as another measure to support sportspersons.
CM Yogi named several women athletes who have represented India on international platforms, including Parul Chaudhary, Priyanka Goswami, Prachi Chaudhary and Annu Rani in athletics; Asmita Dey in judo; Deepti Sharma and Meghna Singh in cricket; Vandana Katariya in hockey; and Divya Kakran in wrestling.
The Chief Minister further recalled the challenges faced by women athletes before 2017, claiming that insecurity, limited resources and a lack of opportunities had restricted their progress.
