Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed grief over the loss of lives in the fire at a coaching centre in Lucknow’s Aliganj area and announced ex gratia assistance for the victims’ families.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister described the incident as heartbreaking, conveyed condolences to the bereaved families, and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. He said the local administration was extending all possible assistance to those affected.

The Prime Minister also announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured.

According to reports, at least 15 people, including 12 men and three women, lost their lives in the fire.

The blaze reportedly broke out at a coaching centre operating inside a three-storey building in Aliganj’s Purniya area, rapidly filling the premises with thick smoke and triggering panic.

Several people sustained serious injuries after jumping from the upper floors and the terrace in an attempt to escape.

Fire personnel, police and administrative officials rushed to the spot and launched rescue and evacuation operations.

Residents also assisted in the rescue efforts, while hospitals admitted several injured persons for treatment.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and officials are continuing rescue and relief operations.
