Eleven individuals suffered severe burn injuries after an LPG cylinder exploded at a roadside food stall in the busy Lauria market of West Champaran district on Friday afternoon.

The incident took place at approximately 1:30 PM when the cylinder, which was being used for cooking, suddenly burst. Around a dozen people were standing nearby at the time, and most of them were engulfed by the flames that followed the explosion.

The Station House Officer of the Lauria police station confirmed that four of the injured are in a critical state.

The intensity of the blast sent shockwaves through the marketplace, with several shopkeepers stating that the sound resembled that of an explosive device.

Witnesses claimed that a minor gas leak had reportedly been detected earlier in the day. However, due to the heavy rush of customers in the market, the issue was allegedly not addressed.

As the temperature increased during the afternoon, the cylinder is suspected to have overheated before detonating.

The explosion triggered a rapid spread of fire, igniting the clothing of several bystanders.

Residents and traders quickly stepped in to control the situation, pouring water from available containers to suppress the flames. After sustained efforts lasting nearly half an hour, the blaze was finally extinguished.

In the absence of immediate ambulance services, locals transported the injured to the Lauria Health Centre using autorickshaws and motorcycles.

Medical Response

Medical personnel initiated emergency treatment upon their arrival. Doctors reported that several victims had sustained deep burns on their faces, torsos, hands and legs, with some remaining in a precarious condition.

Those requiring specialised care were subsequently referred to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Bettiah. The proprietor of the food stall was also among the injured.

Police officials secured the site soon after the incident and took possession of the damaged cylinder.

Preliminary inquiries indicate that leakage from an ageing cylinder may have been responsible for the blast.

Authorities are continuing their investigation, and the debris may be subjected to forensic analysis.
