Letter Of Transferred Judge Seeking Suspension Of Delhi Police Surfaced On Internet

Justice Gaurang Kanth’s letter has emerged, wherein he requested the suspension of police personnel assigned to his residence due to alleged dereliction of duty and incompetence.

Justice Gaurang Kanth’s letter has emerged, wherein he requested the suspension of police personnel assigned to his residence due to alleged dereliction of duty and incompetence. The letter, addressed to the Joint Commission of Police (Security) at Delhi Police, is dated June 12, 2023, during his tenure as a judge in the Delhi High Court. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Calcutta High Court earlier in the same week.

The letter accuses the police personnel of failing to follow his instructions to keep the door locked, leading to the unfortunate loss of his pet dog. Justice Kanth expressed grave concern about the security officials’ negligence, stating that their actions pose a serious threat to his life and liberty.

He further highlighted the unacceptable lack of attention in manning the gate and monitoring the movement in and out of his residence. Urging immediate action, Justice Kanth requested the suspension of the officers involved and called for a thorough investigation into the matter. He requested a response and an action taken report within three working days.

On July 15, the Centre officially appointed Justice Kanth to the Calcutta High Court. This decision was met with concern by the Delhi High Court Bar Association, which passed a resolution expressing reservations about the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendation to transfer Justice Kanth. The association feared that this move would adversely impact the dispensation of justice in the Delhi High Court due to the reduction in the number of judges. Consequently, they instructed their members to abstain from work on July 17 in protest.
