Leander Paes Joins BJP, Thanks Amit Shah; Vows Commitment To Youth And Sports

Tennis legend Leander Paes has expressed his gratitude to Amit Shah after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, stating that he will strive to honour the trust placed in him with dedication and sincerity.

Taking to X, Paes said he felt deeply honoured by the opportunity and pledged to contribute meaningfully to the nation.

Reflecting on his journey, Paes noted that while he had proudly worn the Tiranga on his chest as a sportsperson, he now carries it on his shoulders in a new role. He emphasised his commitment to empowering youth and strengthening the sports ecosystem across India.

In a separate post, Paes also thanked Nitin Nabin for his encouragement and support, describing him as instrumental in inspiring his political journey. He reiterated his focus on working with integrity, particularly towards youth development and the growth of sports in the country.

Paes formally joined the BJP in New Delhi in the presence of senior party leaders, days after meeting Nitin Nabin in Kolkata, which had sparked speculation about his political move.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju welcomed Leander Paes into the party, calling his entry significant and citing his national recognition as a tennis star. He said Paes drew inspiration from the government’s efforts to promote sports.

Paes, a multiple Grand Slam winner, had earlier joined the All India Trinamool Congress in 2021 and campaigned in the Goa Assembly elections without contesting. His move comes as political activity intensifies in West Bengal ahead of the Assembly polls.

The Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, will face the BJP, which aims to expand its presence. Authorities will hold elections on April 23 and 29, with counting on May 4 across all 294 constituencies.
