Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday clarified that there is no lockdown in the country and urged state governments to prevent hoarding while ensuring an uninterrupted fuel supply. He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for cutting excise duties on petrol and diesel, calling it a significant step to protect citizens during global uncertainty.
Addressing reporters, Rijiju said the government acted decisively despite challenging global conditions, particularly with disruptions in regions supplying oil and gas. He emphasised that the decision reflects the Centre’s commitment to shielding citizens from rising international fuel prices.
Rijiju highlighted that the government reduced excise duties to keep petrol and diesel prices under control, ensuring that essential fuels remain affordable for daily use. He noted that citizens across the country have welcomed the move, recognising its impact on easing financial pressure.
Underscoring parliamentary support, Rijiju said Members of Parliament would welcome the decision, as it directly benefits the public. He added that the move demonstrates responsive governance and strong leadership during a period of crisis.
Dismissing speculation about a possible lockdown, Rijiju stated that the government remains fully in control and has cautioned against panic. He urged states to act responsibly by maintaining supply chains and preventing any artificial shortages caused by hoarding.
The Minister stressed that state governments must ensure there is no shortage of LPG, petrol, or diesel and called for coordinated efforts across all levels of administration.
Emphasising unity, Rijiju said the situation requires collective responsibility to maintain stability and public confidence.
The Minister’s remarks reflect the government’s broader strategy to balance affordability, ensure supply security, and prevent panic amid global energy pressures, while reinforcing a coordinated ‘Team India’ approach in managing the situation.
