Union Minister Kiran Rijiju said he has a deep personal appreciation for the sweetness of the Urdu language, which he said enriches those familiar with it and teaches ways of living while helping shape personality.
He was addressing the Urdu Journalism Conclave organised by Bharat Express News Network under its Bazm-e-Sahafat initiative at the India International Centre in New Delhi.
The conclave, organised with NCPUL under the Ministry of Education, saw Rijiju say Urdu originated in India and belongs to no particular religion or community.
Several prominent figures from journalism, literature and public life participated in the inaugural session.
These included former Union minister and BJP national spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, former Rajya Sabha MP and senior journalist Shahid Siddiqui, and Professor (Dr) Shahid Akhtar, Acting Chairman of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions.
Bharat Express News Network Director and Group Managing Editor Radhe Shyam Rai delivered the keynote address, while NCPUL Director Dr Mohammad Shams Iqbal gave the introductory remarks. Bharat Express Urdu Editor Dr Khalid Raza Khan delivered the welcome address, with Chief Sub-Editor Dr Nisar Ahmad Khan serving as the moderator.
Hussain described Urdu as a custodian of India’s shared cultural heritage, while Siddiqui linked the language with culture, dignity and love.
He also stressed the need to use artificial intelligence to promote Urdu more widely. Professor Shahid Akhtar said Indian languages, including Urdu, would have an important role in the vision of a developed India by 2047.
Radhe Shyam Rai highlighted Hindi-Urdu ties and shared traditions. The conclave featured a documentary, panel discussions on Urdu journalism and political dialogue, and an All India Mushaira and Kavi Sammelan.
