Seven people were killed after a speeding 18-wheeler trailer truck allegedly ran over villagers gathered near an accident site in Jharkhand’s Khunti district on Thursday night.
The accident occurred around 10:00 PM near the Jone-Ludru turn on the Karra-Torpa main road.
A scooter had met with an accident, prompting residents to gather and help the rider. The speeding truck, coming from the Torpa side, allegedly ploughed into the crowd.
Six people died on the spot, while a 12-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries at Khunti Sadar Hospital. A young girl was also injured.
The incident triggered protests on Friday, with villagers burning tyres and blocking the road near the Karra railway crossing. They demanded the driver’s arrest, government jobs for the victims’ families and adequate compensation.
Protesters raised concerns over poor visibility and road conditions, alleging that heavy vehicles frequently speed along the accident-prone stretch.
Police and administrative officials reached the spot, assured demonstrators of assistance and compensation under government provisions, and deployed additional personnel to maintain order.
