The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) next director will be Karnataka police chief Praveen Sood.
In March, Mr. Sood made headlines after Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar accused him of defending the state’s BJP government. Invoking the fact that the state’s Director general of police was allegedly bringing against Congress leaders, Mr. Shivakumar demanded his arrest.
Praveen Sood, a 1986-batch IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre, will succeed current chief Subodh Kumar Jaiswal when his term expires.

Mr. Sood’s appointment follows the selection of three senior IPS officers by a high-level committee for the post of CBI Director.
A committee made up of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha chooses the CBI director for a definite term of two years. Up to five years can be added to the tenure.
