In a distressing incident from Chitradurga, Karnataka, a man incurred losses of Rs 1.5 crore in an online betting case, ultimately resulting in his wife’s tragic suicide. The grim episode came to light when the father of the 24-year-old woman approached the authorities, expressing concern that his daughter had been under immense pressure from loan lenders. These lenders frequently visited their home, demanding repayment of loans.
The couple, who tied the knot in 2020, had their lives disrupted when the young woman, identified as Ranjitha, discovered that her husband, Darshan, was involved in cricket betting nearly a year into their marriage. The incessant visits from lenders seeking repayment led to frequent altercations in the household, as alleged by the complainant.
The distress and mental anguish Ranjitha endured due to these circumstances drove her to take the extreme step, as stated in the complaint. Darshan Babu, an assistant engineer employed with the irrigation department, had borrowed a staggering Rs 84 lakh from over a dozen lenders. Tragically, he squandered the entire amount in cricket betting, even resorting to issuing blank cheques as part of the gambling process.
In response to the situation, authorities have registered a complaint under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Three lenders implicated in the case have been apprehended by the police, as investigations continue into this harrowing ordeal.
