Junior doctors protesting the horrific rape and murder of a female doctor from RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in August have decided to request Durga Puja committees to play an audio message from the victim’s mother at pandals during the festival.
The doctors want this poignant message broadcast hourly at the various pandals throughout the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations. In the emotional recording, the victim’s mother shares how the festival has become devoid of joy for her family due to the tragic loss.

The victim’s family is also organizing a dharna in front of their ancestral home in Panihati, North 24 Parganas district, to protest the crime. “Is my daughter really dead? Or is she still alive among those junior doctors who are protesting for my daughter?” the victim’s mother expresses in the message. She reflects on her daughter’s plans for the festival, lamenting that the immersion of her daughter has occurred long before the ritual immersion of Durga idols. “I thank the people who have hit the streets so that I get justice for my daughter,” she adds.
The mother has urged visitors to the Puja pandals to take a moment to pray to Goddess Durga for justice. “I will request the common people to pray to Ma Durga to finish all the demons and evils on this Earth before going back. The protesting junior doctors did not study medicine to protest on the streets, but the situation has compelled them to do so,” she said.
The junior doctors’ hunger strike has entered its third day, with the number of participants increasing to seven as another doctor joined the protest on Saturday evening. The ongoing demonstrations aim to highlight the need for justice and greater safety for healthcare professionals and women in society.
