As Magh Purnima Snan marked the conclusion of the sacred month-long Kalpvas, thousands of Kalpvasis bade an emotional farewell to the Maha Kumbh, the world’s largest spiritual and cultural gathering held on the holy banks of the Sangam in Prayagraj.
The Kalpvasis concluded their sacred journey with the final bath in the Triveni with cherished memory and renewed energy.
Notably, ‘Kalpvas’ commenced with a holy bath on the eve of ‘Paush Purnima’ and culminated with a sacred bath on ‘Magh Purnima’ in the Triveni at Kumbh. ‘Kalpvasis’ set off to their homes carrying the holy essence of Maha Kumbh.
The Kalpvasis, who immersed themselves in the divine rhythm of prayer, penance, and meditation, also witnessed the grandeur of the revered Akharas.
As dawn broke on Magh Purnima, they took their final dip in the Triveni during the auspicious Brahma Muhurta before returning to their camps for concluding rituals. Guided by the Tirtha Purohits, they performed sacred offerings, including havan and various forms of charity.

While scriptures mention 84 types of donations, offerings were accepted based on each devotee’s faith and capacity. Rituals such as donating beds, food, clothing, and money were observed with great reverence. For those unable to complete their offerings on Magh Purnima, a final bath in Trijata the next day served as an alternative before their departure.
Over ten lakh Kalpvasis left the Maha Kumbh spiritually enriched and carrying divine blessings.
The Kumbh administration implemented a strategic exit plan for the Kalpvasis to ensure a safe and organized departure. DIG Kumbh Vaibhav Krishna had previously appealed to devotees regarding the orderly dispersal process.
Given the enormous crowd, vehicles were permitted to exit only after the fairgrounds began to clear. Tractors and other small vehicles designated for the Kalpvasis were stationed in parking areas outside the fair zone, ensuring smooth transit once devotees completed their final rituals and bathing.
While the Maha Kumbh is held in four locations across India—Prayagraj, Ujjain, Nashik, and Haridwar—the unique tradition of Kalpvas is exclusive to Prayagraj. This year’s Maha Kumbh held special significance, as the Yogi government transformed it into a divine, grand, and pristine experience. Kalpvasis residing in different sectors of the fair area noted the remarkable improvements made to their accommodations and facilities.
For Ram Achal Mishra from Pratapgarh, this year marked his 18th Kalpvas. He emphasized that the opportunity to listen to saintly discourses was invaluable beyond adhering to strict spiritual disciplines. He also appreciated the administration’s thoughtful decision to allocate Kalpvas camps near the banks of the Ganga.
Similarly, 76-year-old Shivnath Gahmari from Satna, who undertook his 23rd Kalpvas despite the harsh winter, became emotional as he recounted his experience. He said, “Leaving the sacred embrace of Maa Ganga with a profound sense of peace and spiritual fulfilment, I vow to return once again to partake in this unparalleled journey of devotion and enlightenment.”
