Following the defeat in the Madhya Pradesh elections, the Congress has initiated a significant overhaul by replacing senior leader and former chief minister Kamal Nath with Jitu Patwari as the state unit chief. This move is seen as a strategic attempt by the party to make a fresh start in the crucial heartland state, with an eye on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections just four months away. OBCs, constituting over 50% of voters in Madhya Pradesh, are expected to play a crucial role in the party’s new approach.
Despite securing only 66 seats in the 230-member Assembly, while the BJP won 163, the Congress aims for a revival in the state where the BJP has been in power for nearly two decades. In a surprising shift, Deepak Baij will continue as the state unit chief in Chhattisgarh.
In Madhya Pradesh, the party has appointed Umang Singhar as the Congress Legislative Party leader, positioning him as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.
Hemant Katare has been chosen as the deputy leader. These selections not only mark a generational change but also showcase the Congress’ attempt at caste balancing.
Kamal Nath, a Brahmin leader, has been succeeded by Jitu Patwari, an OBC leader. Umang Singhar, a tribal leader, represents a strategic move in tribal representation.
Additionally, the appointment of Hemant Katare may aim to retain the support of the Brahmin community after the replacement of Kamal Nath.
