Syed Sadatullah Hussaini, President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), has strongly condemned the arrest of Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan and others in Bareilly, calling it ‘a troubling reflection of the direction in which communal politics and hatred-driven governance are steering our country’.
Hussaini criticised authorities for criminalising a peaceful expression of faith, saying they wrongly equated the slogan ‘I Love Prophet Muhammad’ with threats to public order.
Hussaini said reports indicate that authorities initially placed Maulana Khan under house arrest. They then filed sweeping FIRs under the stringent provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, naming hundreds of Muslims without proper investigation.
He criticised derogatory remarks by some political leaders, describing the episode as an ‘outrageous assault on India’s civilisational ethos of respect and pluralism’.
The JIH President highlighted that law enforcement must act with parity and proportionality while condemning acts of violence.
He pointed out that authorities had managed similar protests in the past. They did so without resorting to draconian charges or criminalising entire communities. He added that selective enforcement undermines both constitutional principles and the rule of law.
Warning Against Communal Polarisation
Hussaini cautioned that misuse of state machinery for political ends risks deepening communal divisions and eroding democratic institutions.
He stated that politicians divide communities, foster mistrust, and compromise the nation’s social fabric for narrow gains. He warned that such actions endanger India’s pluralistic foundations.
Addressing the Muslim community, Hussaini urged followers to remain steadfast, peaceful, and guided by the Prophet’s message of patience, mercy, and compassion.
He appealed to the government to withdraw exaggerated charges, release those wrongfully detained, and restore fairness and justice in governance.
“India’s strength lies in its Constitution, its pluralism, and its social fabric of mutual respect. Undermining these foundations for short-term political advantage harms the entire nation,” Hussaini concluded.
