President Maulana Arshad Madani has directed Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind to campaign against the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024. Members of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind are meeting with opposition party leaders and the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to protest the bill’s harmful amendments and their potential effects on Muslim Waqf properties.
In Mumbai, Jamiat Ulama Maharashtra recently met with Shri Mhatre Balya Mama (NCP Sharad Pawar) and Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena). A joint delegation from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind will meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Astalin on August 20.
Across states, including Bihar, Jamiat Ulama members are discussing the bill’s flaws with leaders from various political parties. They are warning that the bill could endanger Waqf properties and weaken claims to mosques, mausoleums, Imam Bars, and graveyards. The bill’s provisions to abolish the Waqf Tribunal and transfer rights to the District Collector are central to these concerns.
The JPC, consisting of 31 members (21 from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha), will convene on August 22. The Waqf Committee will also hold its first meeting.
Maulana Arshad Madani has criticized the bill as a deliberate attempt to undermine Muslim heritage. He argues that the bill infringes on religious matters and seeks to transfer control of Waqf properties to the government, thus threatening Muslims’ religious and constitutional rights.
