Jamia Hamdard marked the 12th International Day of Yoga with remarkable enthusiasm and active participation, as over 200 members of the university community gathered on campus to celebrate the ancient practice’s enduring relevance in modern life.
The event, organised by the university’s Yoga Club under this year’s global theme ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, transformed the verdant campus into a sanctuary of wellness and mindfulness.
Leading the session was Yogacharya Deepak Singh, whose expert guidance took participants through a comprehensive sequence of asanas, pranayama, and meditation techniques.
The seasoned instructor emphasised how these practices contribute to holistic health and mental well-being, making them indispensable tools for navigating contemporary life’s challenges.
Prof Seema Rani, President of the Yoga Club, presented an impressive report of the club’s activities during the 2025-26 session. She further highlighted the innovative ‘Yoga breaks’ integrated between classes, regular sessions conducted during Orientation Programs of SNER and SUMER, and various workshops that have become institutional fixtures.
“The response to our Yoga initiatives has been overwhelming,” Prof Rani noted, detailing the video and poster competitions that have successfully engaged students, teachers, and non-teaching staff alike.
Key Addresses
Prof Reshma Nasreen, Dean of Students’ Welfare, set the tone for the gathering with her welcome address that underscored Yoga’s transformative power. She further articulated how the practice integrates physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions to foster harmony and life balance.
“I encourage every student to make Yoga a non-negotiable part of their daily routine,” Prof Nasreen stated.
Prof Reshma Nasreen elaborated on Yoga’s crucial role in building discipline, resilience, and focus among young people, particularly relevant in today’s high-stress academic environment. Her remarks on Yoga’s potential to promote graceful and healthy ageing resonated deeply with the diverse audience.
Col Tahir Mustafa, Registrar of Jamia Hamdard, addressed the gathering, lending institutional weight to the celebrations. His presence, however, underscored the university administration’s unwavering support for wellness initiatives that benefit the entire campus community.
Prof Asgar Ali, Acting Vice Chancellor, delivered the keynote address, lauding the Yoga Club’s tireless efforts in promoting a healthy lifestyle across the university. He reaffirmed Jamia Hamdard’s commitment to integrating traditional Indian knowledge systems with modern education—a vision that Yoga embodies perfectly.
“This institution has always believed in the synthesis of ancient wisdom and contemporary learning,” Prof Ali further observed. “Yoga represents this synthesis at its finest.”
The celebration concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Prof Seema Rani, who expressed profound gratitude to the university administration, Yogacharya Deepak Singh, and all participants for their contributions to the event’s success.
The gathering, however, served as a powerful reminder of Jamia Hamdard’s dedication to fostering wellness, mindfulness, and community spirit through the timeless practice of Yoga — proving that even in an increasingly digital world, the ancient tradition continues to unite and heal.
