India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a fresh telephonic conversation with Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday. The discussion focused on bilateral cooperation and the role of BRICS amid the intensifying crisis in West Asia.
This exchange marked the fourth dialogue between the two leaders since hostilities escalated involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
The call followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday night. Both leaders assessed the deteriorating security situation across the region.
Posting on X, Jaishankar stated that the ministers discussed bilateral matters and BRICS-related issues. India currently chairs the grouping, while Iran recently joined the bloc.
According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Araghchi briefed Jaishankar on recent developments following military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran. He warned that the attacks could threaten regional and international security.
The Iranian minister reaffirmed Tehran’s determination to exercise what it called its legitimate right to self-defence. He also urged global organisations and regional institutions to condemn the military strikes.
During the discussion, Jaishankar reiterated India’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Iran in bilateral and multilateral forums. He emphasised that lasting stability in the region requires collective diplomatic engagement.
Meanwhile, PM Modi expressed deep concern about rising tensions and civilian casualties during his conversation with President Pezeshkian. He stressed that safeguarding Indian nationals remains the government’s foremost priority.
The Ministry of External Affairs also confirmed that India has intensified diplomatic outreach to Gulf nations.
Officials highlighted the importance of dialogue, protection of civilians, and respect for sovereignty.
India has also discussed maritime safety with Iran. Recently, Iranian authorities allowed Indian-flagged tankers Pushpak and Parimal to transit safely through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
