A devastating road accident in Jaipur’s Harmara area on Monday afternoon claimed at least twelve lives and left over ten others injured when a speeding dumper lost control and crashed into a series of vehicles over nearly 300 metres.
The incident took place around 1 PM near Loha Mandi in the Vishwakarma Industrial Area.
According to police officials, the dumper, travelling at an extremely high speed towards the Loha Mandi petrol pump, rammed into vehicles and pedestrians in succession.
Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle appeared to be moving at over 100 km/h before swerving wildly and striking everything in its path.
Cars, motorbikes, and rickshaws were reduced to mangled wrecks, while several victims were severely disfigured.
“It kept crushing vehicles and people in its path,” said a police officer at the scene.
Emergency teams and ambulances were dispatched immediately to transport the injured to hospitals.
Local residents caught the driver, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, and handed him over to the police.
Officials confirmed that he has been detained for questioning.
Police Commissioner Sachin Mittal and Additional Commissioner Rahul Prakash arrived on the scene to oversee rescue operations.
Cranes were brought in to clear the wreckage. The seriously injured were taken to the SMS Hospital Trauma Centre, where emergency measures were activated.
The tragedy sparked anger among residents, who demanded stronger road safety measures, such as an underpass or barriers to prevent similar incidents.
Police managed to calm the situation after the crowd gathered in protest.
CCTV footage captured the dumper hurtling down the road and colliding with multiple vehicles.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with further details expected as inquiries continue.
