A 100-day intensive tuberculosis (TB) campaign, initiated under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has made significant strides in early TB detection at the ongoing Maha Kumbh. The campaign has already identified 19 positive TB cases from 562 individuals tested at the Maha Kumbh Central Hospital using AI-powered Truenat testing.
For the first time at Maha Kumbh, the Central Hospital is utilizing cutting-edge, AI-powered X handheld machines for TB testing. These devices perform detailed chest examinations via X-rays, and AI cameras analyze infection levels to assess disease severity. Dr. Gaurav Dubey, the Nodal Medical Officer at the Maha Kumbh Mela Central Hospital, explained the process: “Based on the X-ray analysis, doctors can determine the severity of TB in patients, recommend appropriate treatment, and ensure they are enrolled in the DOTS program.”
The 19 individuals who tested positive have been prescribed DOTS medication and referred to district hospitals for further care.
Over Half A Million Patients Tested
Since the beginning of Maha Kumbh, the Central Hospital, along with hospitals across 12 sectors, has provided healthcare services to over 5.47 lakh patients in its outpatient department (OPD). Dr. Dubey highlighted the extensive testing and treatment being provided: “Additionally, 4.64 lakh pathology tests have been conducted, and 4,998 minor surgeries and 14 primary operations have been performed at the temporary hospital.”
The healthcare infrastructure at the Maha Kumbh has been significantly enhanced this year. In addition to TB testing, free X-ray and ultrasound services are being offered to pilgrims for the first time, further improving access to critical medical care.
Dr. Dubey also noted the successful treatment of critical cardiac patients who suffered from crowd-induced suffocation. The medical facilities at Maha Kumbh have handled 15 childbirths during the event, ensuring comprehensive care for all visitors.
