The Indian Navy has launched an investigation into the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. The statue, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Navy Day celebrations last year, fell around 1 p.m. on Monday.
Following the incident, the Navy issued a statement expressing deep concern, describing the event as an “unfortunate accident.” Consequently, the Navy has dispatched a team to determine the cause of the collapse and to initiate immediate repairs, restoration, and reinstatement of the statue.

In their statement, the Navy expressed concern about the damage, stating, “We note with deep concern the damage caused to the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which we unveiled on Navy Day on December 4, 2023. We are working with the state government and specialists to address the issue swiftly and restore the statue to its original condition.”
The 35-foot statue at Rajkot Fort’s collapse has notably embarrassed the state government. In response, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has committed to rebuilding the statue, clarifying that the Indian Navy, not the state government, was responsible for its erection.
Shinde explains, “The statue was installed by the Indian Navy, and its design was also prepared by them. Upon learning of the collapse, I contacted the District Collector, who informed me that a gusty wind with speeds of 45 kmph contributed to the damage.”
Furthermore, Shinde assured the public that Navy officials and state government representatives, including Sindhudurg district Guardian Minister Ravindra Chavan, will visit the site on Tuesday. He promised, “We will restore the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to its full glory.”
The incident has triggered criticism from opposition parties. Congress, NCP (SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT) have accused the state government of negligence, alleging that the statue’s hurried inauguration by Prime Minister Modi prioritized event organization over quality.
NCP (SP) state president Jayant Patil condemned the government’s approach, stating, “The focus was solely on organizing an event with the Prime Minister, rather than ensuring the statue’s quality and durability.”
In conclusion, the Indian Navy and Maharashtra state officials are now collaborating to resolve the issue and ensure the statue’s proper reinstatement.
