India Will Work Closely With Nepal’s New Government, Says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated the people and government of Nepal for the successful and peaceful conduct of national elections, describing the exercise as an important milestone in the country’s democratic journey.

In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister said he was encouraged to see Nepali citizens actively participating in the democratic process.

“I warmly congratulate the people and Government of Nepal on the successful and peaceful conduct of elections. It is heartening to see my Nepali sisters and brothers exercise their democratic rights so vibrantly,” PM Modi wrote.

The post further read, “This historic milestone is a proud moment in Nepal’s democratic journey.”

The Prime Minister also reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening ties with the neighbouring country and working closely with its newly elected leadership.

“As a close friend and neighbour, India remains steadfast in its commitment to working closely with the people of Nepal and their new Government to scale new heights of shared peace, progress and prosperity,” the Prime Minister said in the post.

Early election trends indicate a strong performance by the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which has gained significant momentum under both the First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) electoral model and the proportional representation system.

Preliminary results show the party securing more than 56 per cent of the votes counted under proportional representation.

If current trends continue, the RSP could secure close to two-thirds of the seats in Nepal’s 275-member House of Representatives.

Such an outcome would mark an unprecedented achievement under Nepal’s electoral framework introduced through the Interim Constitution of Nepal 2007.

Overview of the 2022 Nepal Election Results

In the 2022 elections, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), led by KP Sharma Oli, secured nearly 30.69 per cent of the vote.

The Nepali Congress finished second, followed by the UML, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

Under the FPTP system, the RSP, led by Rabi Lamichhane with Balen Shah as its prime ministerial candidate, has already won 36 constituencies and is leading in 83 others.

Lamichhane secured victory in Chitwan-2, while Shah continues to maintain a strong lead against former Prime Minister Oli in Jhapa-3.
