India welcomed 2026 with lively celebrations, countdown parties and festive gatherings across the country.
In major cities such as Delhi and Mumbai, large crowds flocked to iconic landmarks including India Gate, Connaught Place and Marine Drive to ring in the New Year.
Despite the biting cold in the national capital, revellers gathered in markets and open spaces, celebrating with friends and family.
A tourist at Connaught Place said, “I have come from Punjab to celebrate the New Year here, and I hope this year is good for everyone.”
State governments rolled out extensive security arrangements to ensure smooth and incident-free celebrations.
Delhi Police deployed 1,469 personnel in the West District alone, with six Assistant Commissioners of Police and an Additional Deputy Commissioner overseeing security operations.
Authorities across the country issued traffic advisories, safety guidelines for hotels and restaurants, and crowd management protocols to prevent untoward incidents.
In Rajasthan, officials enforced strict traffic measures, carried out vehicle checks and took action against drunk driving. Maharashtra allowed eateries, hotels, bars and pubs to remain open until 5 am on January 1 to accommodate celebrations.
Bengaluru deployed nearly 20,000 police personnel as crowds were expected to cross ten lakh across multiple locations. Police focused on crowd regulation and public safety throughout the night.
Tourist Destinations See High Footfall
Tourist destinations also saw heavy footfall. Shimla and Manali recorded a surge in visitors who braved freezing temperatures to welcome the New Year amid the mountains. The festive mood remained high as tourists combined celebrations with scenic views.
Officials said close monitoring and advanced preparedness helped maintain public safety while preserving the celebratory atmosphere nationwide.
From metropolitan centres to hill stations, India ushered in 2026 with enthusiasm, festivity and heightened vigilance, marking a spirited start to the New Year.
