Mark Birrell, Trade Counsellor for South Asia at the British Deputy High Commission in Mumbai, expressed satisfaction with the recently concluded India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Speaking at a CII event on Thursday, Birrell said the agreement has already started creating positive dialogue between businesses of both nations as the ratification process moves forward.
Birrell hailed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for jointly announcing the trade agreement in the UK earlier in July.
He said, “The relationship is really strong, and I was delighted that the leaders of the two countries visited the UK in July to finalize the free trade agreement.”
“That sent a very positive signal about the relationship, and I hope it will continue to strengthen,” he further added.
When asked about the US administration’s decision to impose a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, Birrell declined to comment.
“It will positively impact the trading relationship between the two countries,” he stated.
Birrell highlighted that the FTA lowers tariffs, reduces non-tariff barriers, and serves as a wider positive signal of the strong trading partnership between India and the UK.
At the same event, Ming Foong Cheong, Consul General at the Consulate General of Singapore, emphasised India’s rising importance in global trade.
“In an increasingly interconnected world, India’s role in global trade is more important than ever. India’s large internal market, green resources, and digital prowess position it to drive the future of global trade and economic integration,” Cheong said.
