The Government of India has declared seven days of national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification on Friday, confirming that the mourning period will extend until January 1, 2025, as a mark of respect to the former leader.
The Ministry of Home Affairs shared the announcement with the chief secretaries of all states and Union Territories, highlighting Dr. Singh’s significant contributions to the country’s political and economic landscape. During the mourning period, authorities have canceled all government programs scheduled for Friday and suspended official entertainment.
The official statement confirmed that the government will conduct the former Prime Minister’s final rites with full state honours. Additionally, the National Flag will fly at half-mast across the country at all government buildings where it is regularly displayed. The period of mourning will also see a halt in official entertainment.
Dr. Singh’s death came after he was rushed to AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) on the evening of December 26 following a sudden medical emergency. According to a statement from the hospital, he had experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at home. Despite immediate efforts to resuscitate him, Dr. Singh could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM. The hospital confirmed his passing late on Thursday night.

The hospital’s statement confirmed that he had received treatment for age-related medical conditions and that doctors had brought him to the medical emergency at AIIMS. Unfortunately, despite all efforts, doctors could not revive him.
Dr. Singh’s death marks the end of an era in Indian politics. Serving as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, he is widely regard for his pivotal role in India’s economic liberalization. His tenure saw groundbreaking reforms, including the opening of India’s markets and a major boost to the country’s global economic standing.
Dr. Singh’s career in public service spanned several decades, beginning with his tenure as Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao in the early 1990s. His decisive leadership during that period helped India navigate a severe economic crisis and introduced sweeping reforms that have left a lasting imprint on the nation’s economy.
Earlier on Friday, authorities transported Dr. Singh’s mortal remains from AIIMS to his residence in New Delhi, where his family, including his wife Gursharan Kaur and their three daughters, gathered. Dr. Singh’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders across the country, reflecting his widespread respect and legacy.
In April 2024, Dr. Singh retired from his position in the Rajya Sabha, after serving as a Member of Parliament for several decades. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had praised his distinguished parliamentary career, acknowledging his contributions to Indian politics and governance.
Dr. Singh’s death has left a void in Indian politics, but his leadership and legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. His calm demeanor, intellectual rigor, and economic vision transformed India during one of the most crucial periods in its post-independence history.
