Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Passes Away At 92; Tributes Pour In

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. He had been admitted to AIIMS Delhi in a critical condition after his health deteriorated on the evening of December 26, 2024. Singh, who retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, had been battling age-related medical conditions. The hospital confirmed that he passed away despite efforts to revive him. A statement from AIIMS said that Singh had suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at home, and resuscitative measures were immediately initiated. He was brought to the medical emergency at AIIMS at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.

Nation Mourns The Loss Of A Distinguished Leader

Manmohan Singh was a towering figure in Indian politics and served the nation in various capacities, including as the country’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. Political leaders from across party lines, including BJP President JP Nadda and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, rushed to AIIMS after news of his demise. The entire nation mourns the loss of a leader who left an indelible mark on India’s economic and political landscape.

Rahul Gandhi, paying tribute to the former PM on X, said, ‘I have lost a mentor and guide.

PM Modi’s Tribute to Singh’s Legacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X, remembering the late leader’s immense contributions to India. Modi wrote, “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives.”

PM Modi also shared his personal interactions with Singh, recalling their discussions when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat and Singh was the Prime Minister. “Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji and I interacted regularly when he was PM and I was the CM of Gujarat. We would have extensive deliberations on various subjects relating to governance. His wisdom and humility were always visible. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the family of Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji, his friends, and countless admirers. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister added.
