The Indian government on Saturday suspended the exchange of all inbound mail and parcels from Pakistan, intensifying its response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead, most of them tourists.
In a formal notification, the Ministry of Communications announced the immediate halt to postal services from Pakistan via both air and surface routes.
“The Government of India has decided to suspend exchange of all categories of inbound mail and parcels from Pakistan through air and surface routes,” the ministry stated, citing national security concerns in the wake of the brutal attack.
Earlier the same day, the Centre had banned all imports from Pakistan both direct and indirect underscoring a comprehensive policy shift amid escalating bilateral tensions.
A notification from the Ministry of Commerce clarified the scope of the embargo: “Direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan, whether or not freely importable or otherwise permitted, shall be prohibited with immediate effect, until further orders.”

The ministry cited public policy and national security as the basis for the decision.
Any exception to the restriction would require prior government approval.
In a further step, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways issued a directive barring Pakistani-flagged ships from entering Indian ports.
The Indian government further ordered Indian vessels not to dock at ports in Pakistan.
The directive, which took effect immediately, emphasised the need to protect Indian shipping assets and infrastructure.
“In the interest of national security and Indian shipping, this decision ensures the safety of Indian cargo and related infrastructure,” the ministry stated.
“The objective of the Act is to foster the development and ensure the efficient maintenance of an Indian mercantile marine, in a manner best suited to serve national interests.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi further reaffirmed India’s commitment to combat terrorism during a joint press conference with Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço.
“We are firmly united in our stance against terrorism,” PM Modi declared.
“I expressed my gratitude to President Lourenço and the people of Angola for their sympathies to those killed in the Pahalgam terror attack.”
He added, “We will take firm and decisive actions against terrorists and those who support them.” We thank Angola for its support in our fight against terrorism.”
