Carney To Meet Trump At White House Amid Trade Tensions

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet United States President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday, following what he described as a ‘very constructive’ phone conversation earlier this week.

The announcement came during Carney’s first press conference since securing a federal election victory on Monday.

“We agreed to meet next Tuesday in Washington,” Carney stated, underscoring his intent to engage with the US administration on key economic issues.

Focus On Tariffs And Bilateral Relations

The upcoming meeting will centre on pressing trade matters and the broader Canada–US relationship, according to the Prime Minister.

“Our focus will be on both immediate trade pressures and the broader future economic and security relationship between our two sovereign nations,” he said, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

He further clarified that the discussions will address two main categories: “There are the immediate tariffs—both sectoral and so-called reciprocal—as well as fentanyl tariffs, and then there is the broader relationship.”

Preparing For A ‘Difficult But Constructive’ Discussion

When asked how he planned to avoid a repeat of the public dispute that occurred earlier this year between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Carney responded with cautious optimism.

“I go there with the expectation of constructive—difficult, but constructive—discussions,” he explained. “You go to these meetings well prepared, understanding the objectives of your counterpart and always acting in the best interest of Canada.”

Parliament To Reopen With Royal Address

Meanwhile, Carney confirmed that His Majesty King Charles III will deliver the Speech from the Throne on 27 May, marking the formal resumption of Parliament.

It will be the first time a reigning sovereign has opened Canada’s Parliament since Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1957.

Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit Canada from 26 to 27 May to attend the State Opening of Parliament in Ottawa.

The visit coincides with the opening of the new legislative session, which will begin with the election of the Speaker, followed by the Throne Speech.

Liberals Form Minority Government

Carney’s Liberal Party is preparing to form a minority government following Monday’s election.

Although his campaign faced relentless pressure from Washington over tariffs and trade, Carney declared in his victory speech last Tuesday that Canada would ‘never’ yield to US pressure.

The House of Commons is scheduled to reconvene on 26 May, according to the current sitting calendar, setting the stage for a critical period in both domestic governance and international diplomacy.
