India has successfully tested its indigenous Mk-II(A) laser weapon, joining a select group of nations with advanced directed-energy capabilities.
India Joins Elite League With US, Russia, And China
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) demonstrated the DEW system at the National Open Air Range (NOAR) in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh.
India now joins the US, China, and Russia in deploying laser-based counter-drone systems capable of shooting down drones and swarms with a 30-kilowatt laser beam.
Beginning Of A Star Wars Journey: DRDO Chairman
Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat said India is likely the fourth or fifth nation to demonstrate this capability, alongside countries like Israel.
“This is just the beginning of the journey,” Kamat told the media.
“We are working on several technologies such as high-energy microwaves and electromagnetic pulse systems. What you saw today is part of the Star Wars capability we’re aiming for,” he added.
Mk-II(A) DEW System Demonstrates Full Capability
The indigenously developed Mk-II(A) DEW system neutralized long-range drones, multiple drone attacks, and enemy sensors with precision.
The laser system engages targets at the speed of light, using a focused energy beam to cause structural failure or destroy critical components like warheads. DRDO officials noted that the weapon’s speed, precision, and lethality make it a potent counter-drone system.
Cutting-Edge System Developed By DRDO Labs
CHESS, Hyderabad, led the DEW system’s development with support from DRDO labs (LRDE, IRDE, DLRL), academic institutions, and industry partners.
The system uses advanced radar and electro-optical sensors to track targets. It delivers rapid laser strikes, cutting costs and minimizing collateral damage.

The proliferation of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and drone swarms has driven the demand for advanced countermeasures. Directed energy weapons offer a long-term, cost-effective solution for these emerging threats.
DRDO says operating the DEW for a few seconds costs only a few litres of petrol, offering a low-cost alternative to missile defense systems.
