Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country has maintained sufficient fertiliser supplies to meet agricultural demand, especially with the Kharif season approaching. He added that the government has planned to avoid shortages.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, PM Modi explained that India has broadened its fertiliser import sources while also promoting domestic manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. He said these actions have improved supply stability.
He noted, “We have taken several steps in previous years to support farmers. Fertiliser import has been diversified. We have also given the alternative of ‘Make in India fertiliser’ to the farmers.”
The Prime Minister pointed out that more than 22 lakh solar-powered pumps have been provided to farmers. He said this move reduces dependence on conventional fuels and supports cleaner agricultural practices.
PM Modi highlighted that the ethanol blending programme has delivered measurable results. He said, “Because of ethanol blending, we now import 4.5 crore fewer barrels of oil every year.”
He also mentioned, “Central government has given 15,000 e-buses to the state government as our focus on alternate fuels is making the future safer.”
Managing Global Energy Uncertainty
Referring to developments in West Asia, PM Modi said, “Today, energy is the backbone of the economy. West Asia is a major source of global energy needs. The government is taking measures to minimise the impact of the disruptions in the Middle East, and fundamentals of the Indian economy are very strong.”
At a recent meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security led by PM Modi, officials reviewed the situation in West Asia. They discussed options to diversify fertiliser sources to maintain a consistent supply.
The review also confirmed that coal reserves at power plants are adequate, ensuring an uninterrupted electricity supply.
The government is also working to diversify imports for key sectors, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals. At the same time, it plans to explore new export destinations to promote Indian products.
These measures are part of a larger effort to enhance economic resilience and support sustained growth.
