During a press briefing on 7 May 2025, India clarified its response to recent cross-border provocations, emphasising that it had taken ‘focused, measured, and non-escalatory’ actions.
The Indian military clarified that it had not targeted any Pakistani military establishments.
However, it was also underscored that any attack on military targets within India would warrant a ‘suitable response’.
Pakistani Attempt To Escalate Tensions
On the night of 7-8 May 2025, Pakistan attempted to engage multiple military targets across Northern and Western India, including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, and several other locations using drones and missiles.
India’s Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems successfully neutralised these attacks, preventing significant damage.

The operation is ongoing, so the exact terrorist casualty count remains unclear.
India is now recovering debris from various locations, which confirms Pakistan’s direct involvement in the escalation.
India’s Proportionate Retaliation
In response, the Indian Armed Forces launched targeted strikes against air defence radars and systems in Pakistan, focusing on the same military domains and intensity.
It has been confirmed that one such air defence system located in Lahore has been neutralised.
This proportionate response aims to neutralise any immediate threat while preventing further escalation.
Cross-Border Firing & Civilian Casualties
In addition to the missile and drone attacks, Pakistan has also increased the intensity of unprovoked firing across the Line of Control, employing mortars and heavy-calibre artillery.
Pakistan heavily targeted areas in Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri sectors in Jammu and Kashmir.
Tragically, this assault resulted in the loss of 16 innocent lives, including three women and five children.
In response, India retaliated to stop Pakistan’s mortar and artillery fire, which posed a serious threat to civilian lives.
Commitment To Non-Escalation, If Respected
The Indian Armed Forces have reiterated their commitment to non-escalation, stressing that they can maintain peace and stability only if Pakistan respects ceasefire agreements.
The Indian government remains vigilant and ready to protect its sovereignty while calling for restraint from Pakistan to prevent further loss of life and damage to infrastructure.
The situation remains fluid, with India’s security forces on high alert.
The Indian military has once again demonstrated its capability to defend its borders effectively while exercising restraint in the face of provocation.
The message is clear- India will continue to act in defence of its sovereignty, but remains committed to peace, provided there is respect for established agreements and borders.
