India dismissed Canada’s claims linking Union Home Minister Amit Shah to targeting pro-Khalistan activists, calling the accusations “absurd and baseless.” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India had summoned Canada’s representative and lodged a strong protest through a diplomatic note. He criticized Canada for “unfounded insinuations” against India, claiming these are part of Ottawa’s strategy to discredit the country internationally.
India condemned the Canadian government for allegedly pursuing a vindictive campaign. Deputy Minister David Morrison’s recent statement before Canada’s Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security acknowledged that Canada had leaked intelligence to the media, alleging Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Last month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted in an inquiry that Canada’s allegations against India relied on intelligence, not concrete proof. New Delhi insists it has repeatedly asked Canada to provide evidence, which Trudeau has yet to deliver.
India has long criticized Canada for providing space to extremists who threaten Indian officials and communities. Tensions have risen since India recalled its High Commissioner on October 14, citing security concerns for its diplomats in Canada.
