India Observes Partition Horrors Remembrance Day; PM Modi, Leaders Pay Tribute To Millions Affected

On Thursday, Prime Minister Modi reflected on the immense suffering endured by people during India’s partition. He emphasised the need to reinforce the unity and harmony that bind the nation together.

Marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, the Prime Minister posted on X, “India observes #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay, remembering the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of our history. It is also a day to honour their grit…their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh. Many of those affected went on to rebuild their lives and achieve remarkable milestones.”

“This day is also a reminder of our enduring responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold our country together,” the post added.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also shared his thoughts on the social media platform. He strongly criticised the Congress party for dividing the country. He said that the partition caused widespread violence, exploitation, and displacement, and paid tribute to all victims of the tragedy.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath posted in Hindi (loosely translated) that August 14 is a day of tragedy in Indian history. He highlighted how religious extremism and divisive policies led to riots, murders, and immense suffering.

CM Yogi Adityanath paid tribute to all displaced persons, martyrs, and unnamed victims. He also urged future generations to learn from this painful history.

The CM also shared a video showing the horrors of partition.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also shared a post, stating that the horrors of partition offer many important lessons.

Taking to X, he posted, “The Partition caused immense suffering and had far-reaching human and strategic consequences.”

On #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay, we recall the resilience of those who endured this terrible tragedy. There are many lessons to be learnt from this painful chapter,” the post added.

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

Observed annually on 14 August, Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, or Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas, was established by Prime Minister Modi in 2021. The day serves to remember those who lost their lives and were uprooted during India’s 1947 partition.

The day highlights the struggles, sacrifices, and immense suffering caused by one of the largest mass migrations in human history. It resulted in millions being displaced and numerous tragedies.

Through government initiatives, community events, and global observances, Partition Horrors Remembrance Day ensures that the lessons of partition are preserved, promoting empathy, reconciliation, and respect for the shared history of the Indian subcontinent.
