India Must Take Its Rightful Place On The UN Security Council, Declares UK PM Starmer

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday voiced strong support for India securing its ‘rightful place’ on the United Nations Security Council, citing the country’s exceptional growth and rising global influence.

Following his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Raj Bhavan, Starmer reiterated his call for India to gain permanent membership of the UNSC.

“We want to see India taking its rightful place in the UNSC,” he stated.

His remarks align with the positions of several major nations, including the United States, Germany, France, and Japan, that have consistently endorsed India’s bid for a permanent seat.

Starmer’s statement also underscores the increasing international acknowledgement of India’s expanding role in global governance and multilateral cooperation.

His expression of support echoes similar endorsements made last September by then US President Joe Biden, French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron, and Starmer himself, all calling for a ‘more representative’ United Nations that includes India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil.

Russia Backs Wider UN Reform

Russia has also recently reiterated its backing, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirming Moscow’s support for greater representation from Asia, Africa, and Latin America in the world body.

Highlighting the growing partnership between the UK and India, PM Starmer asserted, “The UK and India stand side-by-side as global leaders in tech and innovation. We are announcing a deal to make Bollywood films in the UK after a fantastic visit to the studio yesterday, and with our deepening cooperation in education.”

UK PM also noted that he had brought ‘the largest trade delegation in a decade’ to India, underscoring the significant business and investment opportunities under discussion.

He said his visit aims to ‘double down’ on the UK–India trade relationship, calling the proposed bilateral trade deal central to their strengthening partnership.

In addition, the UK Prime Minister welcomed the recently concluded Gaza peace deal, noting, “I strongly welcome the news that a deal has been reached on the first stage of the Peace Plan in Gaza. This is a moment of profound relief. The UK will support these crucial immediate steps and the next stages of the talks to ensure full implementation of the Peace Plan.”
