India on Thursday issued an urgent advisory asking its citizens to leave Iran and announced plans to evacuate nationals amid rising safety concerns triggered by ongoing unrest in the country.
The first evacuation flight will likely depart from Tehran to New Delhi on Friday.
The move comes as the situation in Iran continues to deteriorate, prompting Indian authorities to activate emergency evacuation measures in coordination with the Indian embassy in Tehran.
The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association said it has completed all necessary preparations for the first batch of evacuees.
“All students have been duly registered, the Indian embassy has collected their personal details and passports, and the first batch has been informed to remain ready by 8 AM,” the JKSA said in a statement.
Students from Golestan University, along with a few students from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Tehran University of Medical Sciences, will form the first group arriving in India on Friday.
Authorities are likely to share the final passenger list later tonight after formal confirmation.
On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, during which they discussed the evolving situation in and around Iran.
MEA Advises Against Travel to Iran
Separately, the Ministry of External Affairs advised Indian nationals to avoid travelling to Iran. According to the foreign ministry, around 10,000 Indian citizens are currently residing in the country.
India’s advisory comes against the backdrop of escalating regional tensions following warnings from US President Donald Trump of possible military action if Iran continues its violent suppression of nationwide protests.
The protests erupted in Tehran late last month after a historic collapse of the Iranian rial and have since spread across all 31 provinces. Initially driven by economic grievances, the demonstrations have evolved into broader demands for political reform.
Trump has threatened ‘very strong action’, including the possibility of large-scale airstrikes, should Iranian authorities proceed with executing protesters.
In response, Iran’s leadership has declared the country ‘ready for war’ and warned it would strike US military bases across the region in the event of an attack.
