Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) at the Samvidhan Sadan, New Delhi, on Thursday.
Addressing a record gathering of 61 Speakers from 42 Commonwealth countries, he emphasised India’s role in championing the priorities of the Global South on every global platform.
Highlighting India’s G20 Presidency, PM Modi noted that the country placed the Global South at the centre of the international agenda.
He stressed India’s efforts to ensure innovations benefit partner nations through open-source technology platforms, promoting shared growth, inclusivity, and stronger democratic institutions worldwide.
The three-day event, chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, focuses on contemporary parliamentary challenges, including the role of AI, social media, citizen engagement, and the security and welfare of legislators and staff.
PM Modi highlighted India’s initiatives to foster parliamentary cooperation, sharing best practices across member countries to strengthen institutional efficiency.
Underscoring India’s democratic achievements, the Prime Minister cited the 2024 general elections, the largest in history, with nearly 980 million voters, strong women’s participation, and local governance leadership.
He also highlighted India’s economic progress as the fourth-largest economy, its leadership in digital payments (UPI), vaccine production, start-ups, steel, aviation, railways, and agriculture.
PM Modi recalled India’s humanitarian role during the COVID-19 pandemic, supplying medicines and vaccines to over 150 countries.
He emphasised that India’s democratic ethos and cultural values, alongside its technological and economic achievements, enable it to guide the Global South toward inclusive development.
The conference, themed ‘Effective Delivery of Parliamentary Democracy’, reaffirms India’s commitment to democratic innovation, parliamentary cooperation, and building resilient, inclusive institutions in a rapidly transforming world.
