India Gate will remain unlit for one hour on Saturday evening as part of Earth Hour 2026, a worldwide initiative promoting climate awareness and sustainable living.
The lights at the national landmark will be turned off between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM IST, joining a global call for individuals and institutions to reduce energy use and reflect on environmental responsibility.
This year’s observance marks two decades of Earth Hour, led by the World Wildlife Fund.
The campaign carries the theme ‘Give an Hour for Earth’, encouraging people everywhere to dedicate time and action towards protecting the planet.
Since its launch in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has expanded into a major international movement, with participation from millions across more than 190 countries and territories.
Authorities in several Indian cities have appealed to the public to take part by switching off non-essential lights and appliances during the designated hour.
In Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation urged residents to actively join the campaign.
GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan emphasised that the initiative goes beyond energy savings. He noted that small individual efforts can collectively drive significant environmental progress and help build a more sustainable future.
Across India and globally, major landmarks, public spaces, and households will likely participate in the symbolic blackout, drawing attention to climate challenges and the need to conserve natural resources.
In previous years, prominent sites, including Rashtrapati Bhavan, have taken part, reinforcing the campaign’s growing significance.
Environmental specialists highlight that while the one-hour switch-off is symbolic, it underscores the importance of long-term action, ranging from reducing energy consumption to supporting policies that safeguard ecosystems and limit carbon emissions.
