India Expected To Boost Defence Budget By Rs 50,000 Crore Following ‘Operation Sindoor’

India’s defence funding is likely to receive a substantial increase, with government insiders indicating a likely addition of Rs 50,000 crore to the military budget after the successful conclusion of ‘Operation Sindoor’.

According to a report by NDTV citing official sources, this supplementary allocation may approve later this year, potentially raising the total defence expenditure beyond Rs 7 lakh crore for the first time.

The Union Budget for 2025–26, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on 1 February, had already allocated a record Rs 6.81 lakh crore to defence—up 9.2 per cent from the previous year’s Rs 6.22 lakh crore.

If the proposed increase is sanctioned, it will highlight the government’s ongoing focus on military modernisation and strengthening national security.

Sources say the additional funds will target key sectors such as:

  • Research and development,
  • Advanced weapons procurement,
  • Ammunition replenishment, and
  • Acquisition of cutting-edge military hardware

The government will likely introduce the proposal in Parliament during the Winter Session for approval.

Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014, defence spending has grown sharply.

The 2014–15 budget was Rs 2.29 lakh crore, making the current allocation the largest among all ministries, accounting for 13 per cent of the national budget.

‘Operation Sindoor’ Spurs Budget Increase

The push for this budget increase follows India’s decisive ‘Operation Sindoor’, launched in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam on 22 April.

This operation targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and demonstrated India’s enhanced military strength and strategic determination.

It also highlighted the integration of indigenous defence technology with modern warfare capabilities.

The operation highlighted the strength of India’s air defence system, featuring the indigenous Akash missile system, frequently likened to Israel’s Iron Dome.

In a related advancement, India successfully tested a new anti-drone weapon, Bhargavastra, a cost-effective counter-drone system employing micro-rockets to neutralise aerial threats.

Officials confirmed the weapon was trialled at the Seaward Firing Range in Gopalpur, Odisha, earlier this week, successfully meeting all test objectives.
