In a significant development, India and Pakistan have agreed to a ‘full and immediate ceasefire’ following a series of diplomatic talks mediated by the United States.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that both nations would cease all military action on land, air, and sea from 5 PM Indian Standard Time (IST) on Saturday.
The announcement came shortly after the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan called his Indian counterpart at 3:35 PM IST.
The two military leaders agreed to halt all forms of military aggression, including air and naval operations.
This agreement, set to take effect at 5 PM IST, signals a temporary pause in the ongoing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri briefed the media, confirming the cessation of hostilities: “Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding,” he said.
He further noted that the DGMOs would reconvene for another round of discussions on 12 May at 12:00 PM IST to evaluate the situation.
Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump took to social media to announce the ceasefire.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump described the agreement as a “full and immediate ceasefire” and praised both countries for their decision to de-escalate tensions.
“Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence,” Trump wrote, adding, “Thank you for your attention to this matter!” While President Trump did not disclose specifics of the negotiations, his statement came after several rounds of high-level talks.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also addressed the agreement, revealing that negotiators had conducted the ceasefire talks over a period of 48 hours.
Rubio, along with Vice-President J.D. Vance, engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Ministers Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Bilawal Bhutto, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.
In a statement, Rubio said: “I am pleased to announce that the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to begin discussions on a broader set of issues at a neutral site. We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif for their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”
This ceasefire agreement represents a rare moment of calm in the long-standing tensions between India and Pakistan.
Although the specifics of the upcoming talks remain unclear, both sides’ commitment to engage in dialogue marks a crucial step toward peace and stability in the region.
As both nations begin this temporary pause in hostilities, the international community is closely watching developments, hoping that the breakthrough will pave the way for further diplomatic efforts.
