In a historic first, India and Malaysia held talks to discuss security, marking a significant advancement in the strategic relationship between both countries.
The security dialogue between India and Malaysia was co-chaired by Ajit, Doval, National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister of India, and Raja Dato Nushirwan Bin Zainal Abidin, Director General of the National Security Council of Malaysia on 07 January 2025 in New Delhi, India.
As per the release from the Ministry of External Affairs, both the representatives reviewed the ongoing bilateral cooperation in security. In addition, both the parties exchanged views on global and regional security.

In an anticipated step, parties agreed to work to counter-terrorism. Moreover, they locked the deal to deepen the cooperation in the fields like deradicalization, cyber security, defense industry, and maritime security.
Both countries explored ways to enhance collaboration in critical minerals and rare earths. It was confirmed that the dialogue would be institutionalized by holding an annual meeting.
The dialogue came in the aftermath of Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to India. The Malaysian PM came to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi in August 2024.
During the visit, India- Malaysia bilateral ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and both leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral security cooperation.
