India Abstains from UN Vote on Gaza: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s Significant Statement

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the leader of the Congress, voiced her “shock” today that New Delhi chose not to support a United Nations resolution on the Israel-Hamas war. She claimed that it is incompatible with all India has stood for to witness thousands of men, women, and children in Palestine be annihilated in silence.

The resolution titled ‘Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations’ was drafted by Jordan and called for an immediate humanitarian truce in the Israel-Hamas conflict as well as unhindered humanitarian access in the Gaza strip. On Friday, India abstained from voting on it in the UN General Assembly.

The resolution, which called for an urgent, long-lasting, and humanitarian truce that would end hostilities, was approved by the 193-member General Assembly.

Priyanka Gandhi reinforced her point by quoting Mahatma Gandhi’s adage that “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind” in a post on X.

“I am shocked and ashamed that our country has abstained from voting for a ceasefire in Gaza,” Priyanka Gandhi stated.

“Our country was founded on the principles of non-violence and truth, principles for which our freedom fighters laid down their lives, these principles form the basis of the constitution that defines our nationhood,” she stated.

She went on to say that they stand for the moral bravery of India that inspired its activities as a participant in the global community.

“To refuse to take a stand and watch in silence as every law of humanity is pulverised, food, water, medical supplies, communication and power is cut off to millions of people and thousands of men, women and children in Palestine are being annihilated goes against everything our country has stood for throughout its life as a nation,” Priyanka Gandhi stated.

India refrained from voting on the resolution since it made no mention of the “terror attacks” that Hamas was carrying out. There was no mention of Hamas in the resolution.

While it abstained on a resolution on the Israel-Hamas conflict, India declared that terrorism is a “malignancy” that transcends borders, nationalities, and racial categories, and that the world should not accept any rationalisation of acts of violence.

Along with demanding the immediate, ongoing, sufficient, and unfettered provision of basic products and services to residents throughout the Gaza Strip, the resolution received 121 votes in support, 44 abstentions, and 14 votes against.

Over 7,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in the fighting, according to the Health Ministry in Gaza, which is administered by Hamas.

On October 7, Hamas launched their unparalleled terror strikes on Israel, killing almost 1,400 people. Over 220 people are being kept captive in Gaza by Hamas. After then, Israel began its own counterattacks.
