Independence Day 2026: Delhi Police Deploy Thousands Around Red Fort

Delhi Police have launched a large-scale security operation around the Red Fort ahead of the 80th Independence Day celebrations on August 15, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation.

Thousands of Delhi Police personnel and officers from other agencies have taken up positions at strategic locations to secure the historic venue.

Authorities have enhanced their technological capabilities this year, including additional features in the anti-drone system to counter potential aerial threats.

DCP, Central, Rohit Rajbir Singh said security teams have completed verification and screening of more than 20,000 residents and workers living or operating in the sensitive areas surrounding the Red Fort.

DCP, Traffic, Central Range, Nishant Gupta said Delhi Police have introduced special traffic arrangements for the Prime Minister’s address and the arrival of a large number of VIP guests.

Several roads around the Red Fort will remain off-limits to general traffic between 4 AM and 11 AM on August 15.

The restricted routes include Netaji Subhash Marg, Lothian Road, Nishadraj Marg, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, Esplanade Road, Qila Ghat Road and Ring Road/Moat Road.

Authorities will prohibit heavy vehicles from entering or moving through Delhi from 10 PM on August 14 until 11 AM on August 15.

DTC and other buses will not operate along the affected routes during the restricted period.

Designated bus services will follow alternative routes, while their termination points will be shifted to Ramlila Maidan and Tees Hazari Court.

Markets to Remain Open

Delhi Traffic Police will share updates on traffic and parking arrangements through its official X account.

Although roads in the Chandni Chowk area will remain closed during the specified hours, authorities have clarified that there will be no restrictions on shops, markets or shopping malls.

Authorities will enforce the traffic restrictions until 11 AM, after which they will gradually restore normal movement.
