Kanpur: Despite temporary relief from the weather due to the activity of western disturbances for the next two to three days, scorching heat is expected to return soon. According to the Meteorological Department, heatwaves are becoming more frequent, intense, and deadly worldwide due to climate change. Over 90 percent of India may be seriously impacted by abnormal temperatures. Dr. SN Sunil Pandey, a meteorologist at Chandrashekhar Azad University of Agricultural Technology, stated on Friday that the IMD’s forecast indicates most parts of India, excluding a few areas in the East, North-East, and some parts of the North-West, will experience hot weather with temperatures above normal. This could lead to heat-related illnesses, affect agricultural production, cause water shortages, increase energy demand, and impact air quality and ecosystems. These are all signs of an impending heatwave expected to occur from late April.
During a heatwave, there is a period of abnormally high temperatures. A heatwave is declared by the IMD when the maximum temperature reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains and at least 30 degrees Celsius in hilly areas, with a deviation of approximately 4.5-6.4 degrees Celsius from the normal maximum temperature. The IMD may also declare a heatwave if the actual maximum temperature exceeds 45 degrees Celsius. If the temperature surpasses 47 degrees Celsius, a severe heatwave may be declared.
