The Kartikeya Temple in Sambhal celebrated Holi with joy and vibrant colors after a 46-year gap, as devotees gathered to smear each other with gulal and rejoice in the festival’s spirit.
This marks the first Holi celebration at the temple since 1978, when communal riots forced its closure.
Kartikeya Temple Reopened After 46 Years
The Kartik Mahadev Temple, also known as the Bhasma Shankar Temple, reopened on December 13, 2024.
Authorities restored several damaged idols recovered from the site.
The temple remained shut for over four decades after communal riots rocked the city. The Hindu community sees this Holi celebration as a significant and emotional milestone.
Security Measures In Place
Sambhal’s Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shreesh Chandra assured that strict security measures were in place. He said the police are monitoring all activities using CCTV cameras and drones to maintain peace.
“We have deployed enough police personnel to handle any situation. People can celebrate Holi without fear,” said ASP Chandra.
Holi and Ramzan’s ‘Jumma’ prayers coinciding raised security concerns.
However, ASP Chandra dismissed tensions, stating that the police are well-prepared to manage any issues.
The temple is located in Khaggu Sarai, about a kilometre from Shahi Jama Masjid, where violence occurred last year during a protest over a court-monitored mosque survey.
Meanwhile, the district administration covered ten mosques along the Holi procession route with tarpaulin.
Religious leaders from both communities agreed to this measure to prevent any disturbances.
The successful Holi celebration at the Kartikeya Temple reflects improved communal harmony and strengthened security in the city.
